For the person who smiles at a brass band. Three oompah musicians in traditional dress stand outside a mountain chalet, and every hour a different tune plays before the cuckoo calls. Two AA batteries, nothing to wind.
Each hour plays one of 12 melodies, then the cuckoo calls. The tunes are Music Box Dancer, Muss i denn, Lara's Theme (Doctor Zhivago), The Mill in the Black Forest, Barcarolle, Die Lorelei, Oh Mein Papa, The Happy Wanderer, Que Sera Sera, Edelweiss, Für Elise and Clementine. A manual switch silences the clock at night.
Hang it on a screw or nail, put in two AA batteries, and set the time with the minute hand. That is the whole setup: no chains to pull and nothing to wind. Replace the batteries when the call gets weak or the clock starts losing time. Dust with a soft, dry brush, and keep water and furniture polish away from the wood.
