A whole farm scene carved in wood: the farmer couple, their barn, chickens, roosters, ducks and geese, painted by hand by Conny Haas at Rombach & Haas. For a large wall and someone who wants a clock to be looked at for years.

What it does

After the cuckoo calls, a large 36-note Swiss music box plays while the dancers turn, the waterwheel spins, the bell rings and the horse moves its head to feed. It runs eight days on one winding. The weights sit in carved wooden shells, and the dial is finely cut. A switch silences the clock.

Specifications

Maker: Rombach & Haas, Schonach (imported by North Coast Imports)

Made in: Germany

Certificate: Official Black Forest Clock, VdS

Movement: mechanical, 8-day, with music

Music: large Swiss-made 36-note music box

Animation: dancers, waterwheel, bell, horse

Painting: by hand, by Conny Haas

Weights: in wooden weight shells

Night shut-off: shut-off switch

Dimensions: 20 in x 23 in x 10 in, case only

Setup and care

Hang the clock on a sturdy screw so the case sits flat against the wall, hook on the pendulum, hang the weights on the chain hooks and give the pendulum a light push. Then listen: the tick-tock should sound even. If it limps, nudge the bottom of the case a little to the left or right until it does. That is called putting the clock "in beat", and it is the reason most new cuckoo clocks stop after a few minutes.

To wind it, pull the free end of each chain straight down, slowly, until the weight is back near the case. Do it once a week, on the same day. Set the time by turning the minute hand only, clockwise. On a musical clock, let the music and the cuckoo finish each time before you move the hand past the next hour. If the clock runs fast, slide the pendulum bob down a little; if it runs slow, slide it up.

Before moving the clock, take off the pendulum and the weights.
